Why You Should Eat Superfoods Every Day

You’ve probably heard the coined term “superfoods” a lot lately. Especially in the last few years. You’ve seen it in the media, advertisements, and definitely in your local grocery aisles. There seems to be a new headline for an “it” superfood every week.

But it’s more than just a trend.

Superfoods didn’t appear out of no where. These ancient ingredients have been around for centuries. Foods like blueberries, acai, and kale are some popular ingredients that you’ve probably heard of.

We all know they’re good for you, but what makes it so super?

What is a superfood?

With all the buzz, you’re probably confused about what a superfood even is. A Google search will bring you something like: “foods that offer maximum nutritional benefits for minimal calories.”

Okay, so what does that actually mean?

There’s not an official definition from the scientific community. But, the general consensus is that superfoods are high in nutrients.  Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals (the color and smell of the plant). They’re typically low in calories too – if that counts.

Though many companies like to slap “superfoods” on the label, not all are created equal. (Apparently butter? Not likely.) Not everything is a superfood, but it’s more common than you think.

What does it do for your body?

It’s no secret that food can be preventative medicine. Since you know what superfoods offer the body, what exactly do the nutrients do? Why is it so essential to your body?

  • Vitamins and Minerals

These invisible components are essential to your health. Vitamins and minerals affect hundreds of different things orchestrating in your body. It boosts your immune system, repairs your bones, skin and muscles, and many other parts. Vitamins like A, C, E, D and K are essential. Plus minerals like magnesium and iron are just a few of the nutrients you need in your everyday life.

  • Antioxidants

These bad boys can “prevent slow damage to cells caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures”. Basically, it helps fight the bad stuff like pollution, inflammation, and UV rays. Many natural fruits and veggies like broccoli, blueberries and acai are packed with antioxidants.

  • Phytochemicals

-These nutrients are like antioxidants but have a different purpose. It doesn’t just prevent damage. It acts as antioxidants but can neutralize free radicals. It can even cause cancer cells to self-destruct!

Why you should eat it every day

There’s a lot of stuff in our current world that isn’t good for your health – even if you’re being proactive! Like your genetics.  Living in cities with factories that produce carcinogens (that bad cancer stuff). The danger of air quality is also influenced by the influx of wildfires that we’ve heard so much about this summer.

These dangers can cause cancers and chronic diseases.

Can Coffee Actually be Good for You?

People usually turn to coffee when they need an energy boost or because they can’t live without it! Sometimes coffee can even get a bad name because of how much our society relies on this liquid gold. But did you know that there are actually health benefits of coffee?

Instead of spending money on fancy pre-workouts, have a cup of black coffee because it actually improves your physical performance! Another bonus is that it can also help burn fat.

Coffee also has a variety of nutrients such as the B vitamins, potassium, and manganese. It also has a LOT of antioxidants, more than most fruits and vegetables!

Of course, there is that great boost of energy we get from drinking coffee, which comes from caffeine. While coffee has health benefits, too much caffeine is what can cause problems such as restlessness and even caffeine withdrawal over time. When it comes to coffee, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

Here are 3 ways to make sure you are making the most of your coffee consumption:

  1. Be mindful of your coffee consumption. Each person has varying levels of sensitivity to caffeine. One cup is fine but when you start drinking more coffee than water in a day, that might be too much!
  2. Be smart with when you drink your coffee. First thing in the morning or before a workout are great timings. However, too close to bedtime may make it difficult for you to get good quality sleep.
  3. Skip the add-ins! When you get an energy crash after coffee, it is often because of the extra sugar you are adding in. Start by decreasing your sugar in your coffee by ¼ teaspoon every few weeks. Ultimately, you want to enjoy your coffee without any sugar.

BONUS: Have your coffee in a smoothie like in our best selling MORNING MOCHA so you can have breakfast AND your caffeine fix!
